NFL Week 17 Injury: Antonio Gibson, Miles Sanders Out; Justin Fields questionable for bears

As NFL teams fight for their playoff lives with Week 17 on the horizon, teams also battle the dreaded injury virus and the Omicron variant of COVID-19 sweeping the entire NFL. . The Washington football team took a hard hit with this as running back Antonio Gibson was placed on the reserve / COVID-19 list. It came out on Sunday.

Only one team has clinched a playoff spot in the AFC (Kansas City Chiefs), so six playoff spots are up for grabs with two weeks to go. There are two playoff spots left in the NFC, but the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles can lock them up this weekend. Injury will play a role for any of the 24 remaining Super Bowl vying teams over the past two weeks (all teams not eliminated from the playoffs), making Week 17 all the more interesting.

Here is the final injury report for all Sunday games prior to week 17 (remember there are no Saturday games this week):

All NFL odds are taken from Caesars Sportsbook.

  • Eagles : RB Miles Sanders (main) OUT; RB Jordan Howard (stinger) QUESTIONABLE
  • Washington: CB William Jackson III (calf) OUT; DE Montez Sweat (non-injury, personal), WR Curtis Samuel (hamstrings), DE James Smith-Williams (illness) QUESTIONABLE

Washington has placed starting running back Antonio Gibson on the reserve / COVID-19 list, so he’s out for Sunday. Jaret Patterson should start at the running back. With Jackson out and Daryl Roberts on the COVID roster, Washington will be slim at the cornerback before this week.

Sanders was unlikely to play with a broken bone in his hand, but there is good news that Howard was given a questionable designation. Howard was limited to practice on Friday, so there’s a chance he’ll play. Expect to see a healthy dose of Boston Scott for the Eagles with two of their top three running backs battling injury.

  • Giants: WR Collin Johnson (hamstrings), WR John Ross (knee / COVID ramp Up), WR Kadarius Toney (shoulder) OUT; OL Billy Price (staff) DOUBTFUL; CB Adoree ‘Jackson (quad / COVID ramp-up), DL Austin Johnson (foot), TE Chris Myarick (hip), T Nate Solder (COVID ramp-up)
  • Bear: DB Duke Shelley (heel), QB Justin Fields (ankle), T Jason Peters (ankle), DL Eddie Goldman (finger) QUESTIONABLE

The Giants are recovering a lot of players from the COVID roster, but still lack depth at the receiver level with Ross, Toney and Johnson missing – and Darius Slayton still on the COVID roster. Kenny Golladay is the only healthy receiver on the active roster, so expect a few calls from the practice squad.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy has said Andy Dalton will start for Chicago even though Fields was questionable. Peters was a full participant in practice on Friday, so it looks like he will start on the left tackle.

  • Falcons: CB Fabian Moreau (ribs) DOUBTFUL
  • Invoices: DT Ed Oliver (ankle), WR Emmanuel Sanders (knee) QUESTIONABLE

Moreau hasn’t trained for the Falcons all week, so he’s a long way from playing on Sunday.

Sanders did not participate in the Bills’ practice, despite the questionable injury designation. If he doesn’t play for the Bills on Sunday, Gabe Davis and Cole Beasley will have an expanded role in the passing game. Beasley was taken off the reserve / COVID-19 list this week.
