More than 200 million games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise have been sold worldwide.
This is according to a press release from Ubisoft. According to the company, that makes the series “one of the most important franchises in the game industry”.
The first Assassin’s Creed game appeared on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2007. The game originally came about as a new Prince of Persia game, but the developer decided to make it a new franchise. Twelve main parts and various spin-offs have now appeared in the series.
Since Assassin’s Creed Origins was released in 2017, the franchise has taken a new direction. While the games still feature an open world and stealth is a legitimate attacking tactic, the more recent installments focus on action RPG gameplay rather than the pure action and stealth of the earlier installments. The most recent main installment is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which is still supported with new content.
Last weekend, Ubisoft revealed more details about the future of the franchise. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, for example, will be released in 2023, which goes back to the roots of the franchise and becomes comparable to the first parts in terms of gameplay and length. Sometime after that, Assassin’s Creed Infinity should appear, which should serve as a hub for future adventures. The first two “experiences” available in Infinity are Codename Red – set in ancient Japan – and Codename Hexe.
