Dirk Nowitzki statue to be built outside the Mavericks arena

Longtime, now retired Dallas Maverick Dirk Nowitzki will receive a statue outside the American Airlines Center, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban confirmed on Wednesday.

On Wednesday night, the Mavericks hung Nowitzki’s jersey on the rafters after a 99-82 victory over the Golden State Warriors. There was a marching band for the event, which included NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

Head coach Jason Kidd joked that Dallas gave 10-day contracts, giving the former All-Star 14 times a chance to come back.

For 21 years, Nowitzki has been the lifeblood of the Mavericks franchise. In 1,522 NBA games, the German averaged 20.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists, leading the Mavs to their first and only NBA championship in 2011.
