LeBron James received a one-game suspension for his involvement in the Los Angeles Lakers-Detroit Pistons altercation on Sunday, one game less than Isaiah Stewart.
But even so, his teammate and All-Star colleague Anthony Davis struggles to understand why James was suspended – especially given the NBA’s explanation.
“I was surprised. I mean, I didn’t think he would be suspended. I don’t think anyone thought he was going to be suspended, to be honest. It was an accident. I mean, he accidentally hit (Stewart) in the face, “Davis said after the 106-100 loss to the New York Knicks in James’ absence.
“I guess the report came out that his blow to the face caused an incident, which is weird because he can’t control how a guy is going to react. I mean guys get hit in the face all the time , and we say that caused the incident. I get hit in the face probably more than anyone else, and if I go and do all that, the other guy who hit me in the face will also be hanging? strange. But there’s nothing we can do about it. “

James was suspended for “recklessly punching Stewart in the face and initiating an altercation on the field,” the NBA said, while Stewart was suspended for “escalating an altercation on the field by repeatedly and aggressively pursuing James from unsportsmanlike manner “.
This was only the second time James had been kicked out in his 19-season career, and only the first time he had received a suspension.
After Sunday’s game, before the suspensions were issued, Davis was already defending his co-star.
“Everyone in the league knows Bron is not a bad guy, as soon as he hit Stewart he looked back and said ‘oh my God’,” he said after the win. 121-116.
The Lakers face the Pistons in a rematch Sunday at 9:30 p.m. ET on Sportsnet ONE. James and Stewart will both be finished serving their suspensions by then.
