Magic extends contracts for chairman Jeff Weltman and chief executive John Hammond

Ahead of last year’s trade deadline, the Magic offered Nikola Vucevic two first-round picks, Aaron Gordon another first-round pick and Evan Fournier two second-round picks, the last of which will come in 2027. .

The leaders who designed this pivot in the rebuilding – President Jeff Weltman and Chief Executive Officer John Hammond – might even use those choices themselves.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski:

Weltman and Hammond took over the Orlando front office in 2017, inheriting mostly the core of teams that contested the playoffs with a combined record of losses and barely fought in the first round in 2019 and 2020. The Magic have regressed last season. Therefore, the fulcrum in the reconstruction.

So that’s a lot of job security without ever building a winner.

The Magics have a reasonable start to their next era: Cole Anthony, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Wendell Carter Jr. Mo Bamba, Jonathan Isaac, and those additional future picks. Weltman and Hammond are leading the team in a smart direction.

Which is good for keeping their prestigious jobs.
