Warriors’ Klay Thompson scores 17 points in return

After more than two long seasons away from the game with a knee injury and Achilles, Klay Thompson made his long-awaited return to the field on Sunday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After a rowdy introduction in front of home Golden State Warriors fans at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Thompson officially joined Steph Curry and his teammates in the starting lineup for the first time in 941 days.

Thompson quickly put an emotional crowd at the Chase Center into a frenzy with a quick bucket on his first attempt on Golden State’s opener.

The Warriors didn’t push Thompson on his return, limiting him to short bursts of minutes on his debut in the season. The 31-year-old goalkeeper played the first four minutes of the game before being replaced by a standing ovation from the home crowd.

While playing 20 minutes on his return, Thompson showed different flashes of his former All-Star form, including a powerful dunk and a quick 3-point barrage.

Thompson finished the game with 17 points on 7 of 18 shots from the floor with three rebounds, one assist and one block against the Cavs. The five-time All-Star has pierced three triples in eight attempts since the deepest of his comeback.

Outside of the game-high Steph Curry 28 points, Thompson was the second-leading scorer in Golden State’s win over Cleveland, 96-82.

Here’s a look at some of Thompson’s highlights since returning to the Bay Area on Sunday night.
