Anthony Joshua claims Deontay Wilder failed to implement boxing fundamentals that would have allowed him to cause problems for Tyson Fury in the trilogy.
Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs) and Fury (31-0-1, 22 KOs) concluded their great rivalry by playing one of the most memorable heavyweight championship fights in modern boxing history, in October.
The awe-inspiring spectacle in the city of Las Vegas kept fans on the edge of their seats, as Fury was knocked out twice in the 4th round, before coming back in force and winning Wilder by putting out of action on the 11th engagement.
Although visibly “The Bronze Bomber” Lacking technical notions of the noble art, this one made it clear that he has the heart and courage of a champion as he desperately clings to combat.
That said, Joshua (24-2-0, 22 KOs), who had his WBA, WBO and IBF world titles squeezed from the heavyweights against the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk (19-0-0, 13 KOs) barely two weeks before the trilogy Fury vs. Wilder, believes that Wilder ran to his doom by not having assimilated the fundamentals of boxing which, he says, differentiate good fighters from those who are among the greatest:
“He tried, but to have this power and ferocity you have to have it right here (pointing to his head),” firstly said Joshua via JD Sports.
“When you fight at this level, before you have the strength in you (AJ clenches his fists), you have to have that here too (AJ pointing towards his head). “
Boxers like Lennox lewis and Wladimir Klitschko reigned at the top of the heavyweight division sporting a typical European boxing style of a lively jab preceded by a big right hand.
However, the 32-year-old British star believes that the stature of today’s heavyweight fighters has now come to change the game forever:
“Heavyweights these days can no longer just throw 12-round jabs, because now heavyweights are different,” Joshua added.
“I met the guy who makes the boxing gloves the other day, and he said they never had to produce any special gloves. “
“But now heavyweights range in weight between 108 kg and 120 kg and some are 6 feet 10 inches tall. “
“The whole division has changed, say, in the last five years. “
“And before, fighters could jab for 12 rounds and get away with it. They were getting a little tired, but they were well conditioned since they were lighter. “
“But now when you have big guys who are 6 foot 7 they get tired.” “
