Former world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield has praised his successor Tyson Fury. The 59-year-old sees neither Alexander Usyk nor Anthony Joshua as a real chance against the “Gypsy King”.
“Tyson Fury is definitely my number one! He showed what he can, screwed everyone up,” Holyfield told Sport Image. Fury’s victory in the World Cup bout against Deontay Wilder was “exciting” and “brutal”.
“Both of them proved to be tough guys and took incredible punches. But it happens when no one gets down. It wasn’t a technical fight, just a brawl. But people like that! Wilder has hit everything and nothing, Fury was more precise, ”said the American who won various world championship belts between 1990 and 2001.
Fury prevailed on October 10 in a heroic eleventh round knockout battle against Wilder. The Englishman, who holds the WBC belt, now wants a union fight to secure the four world titles in his possession.
However, Ukrainian Usyk, who won the WBA, IBF and WBO association belts from Joshua, will take revenge against AJ first. It is likely that the winner of this duel will then step into the ring against Fury.
For Evander Holyfield (right), Tyson Fury is clearly number 1.
Holyfield: “Usyk must drop bombs”
“Fury will be hard to beat. With Usyk at 100 pounds, I wonder how he’ll counter with Fury’s 122 pounds. He can just lay down on Usyk and suck his energy out. It would be a lousy fight, but effective. Usyk would have to attack him, drop a few bombs, but I don’t know if he has enough power, ”Holyfield said.
Joshua is “probably the only one strong enough to take Fury down. But Fury is just more competent.”
