Oleksandr Oesyk is the new world heavyweight champion after a points victory against defending champion Anthony Joshua. Usyk thus follows in the footsteps of his legendary compatriot Vladimir Klitschko.
Ukrainian Usyk beats Anthony Joshua
Oleksandr Oesyk has dominated the cruiserweights for the past few years, but not long ago made the decision to move up into the heavyweight division. In only his 3rd camp he was already allowed to fight for the world title against the British Anthony Joshua.
In Tottenham’s packed stadium, Joshua was loudly cheered on by the many boxing fans, but their enthusiasm waned as the match progressed. After all, they saw that their favorite was clearly under against Usyk.
In the end Joshua lasted the full 12 laps, but after the last bell he already knew what time it was. The 3 referees unanimously gave the victory to Oesyk.
Oesyk celebrated his title exuberantly, not only waving the Ukrainian flag, but also with an acrobatic dance. Joshua only thought of one thing after the match: a second chance. Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has already announced that it may come in February or March.
