Luis Ortiz vs. Charles Martin
The two heavyweights will meet on January 1st in Florida, USA
The New Year 2022 is about to start with a heavyweight blast. At the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, USA, promoter Leon Margules and his promoter company ‘Warriors Boxing’ are holding the first boxing event of the coming year on the first day of the New Year, January 1, 2022.
It is a night of the heavyweights, which is peppered with six heavyweight fights. Twelve heavy boys meet in fights of the highest weight class.
The main fight will be the 42-year-old 1.93 meter tall Cuban Luis “King Kong” Ortiz (32-2-0, 27 knockout victories) against the 1.96 meter tall, 35-year-old American and former IBF – Heavyweight world champion, Charles “Prince Charles” Martin (28-2-0, 25 knockout victories) from Carson, California, USA.
Luis “King Kong” Ortiz
His match record as an amateur stands at 343 wins versus 26 defeats. His greatest international success with the amateurs was winning the 2006 World Team Championship with Cuba in Baku. In 2006 southpaw Luis Ortiz became the Cuban heavyweight champion. Odlanier Solis, who had dominated this weight class for a long time (Cuban champion 1999-2001 and 2003-2004) had already fled Cuba at this point and signed a professional contract with German promoter Ahmet Öner, as did Yoan Pablo Hernandez, Ortiz in the final of the year 2005 and who then, like Solis, fled to Germany and signed a professional contract with Wilfried Sauerland.
In 2008 Luis Ortiz also fled Cuba in order to be able to switch to the professional camp. He had to leave his wife and daughter behind in Cuba. As a professional boxer based in Florida, he started with a record of 15-0 wins, including 13 knockout victories. His best-known opponent was the American Bert Cooper, whom he defeated in the second round by tKO. On June 17, 2011 Ortiz defeated Luis Pineda in Panama and thereby won the WBA Fedlatin Belt.
The WBA started a fight against the Russian Alexander Povetkin for the year 2014, in which it should be about the vacant regular WBA world championship. However, Povetkin did not want to box against Ortiz and preferred to play against the German Manuel Charr.
In 2014, Luis Ortiz secured the WBA interim title with a win over Lateef Kayode.
This is what Luis “King Kong” Ortiz says about the fight against Charles Martin:
“I’m just grateful and happy to be in this position. It’s great to be on this stage. I am ready to do my job and shine on New Years Day.
“It’s very exciting to fight so close to my adopted home in South Florida. I am always fully motivated to fight, no matter what. My training camp is so intense that I don’t even have time to see my family, but I’m looking forward to this fight back home.
“My mind and body are in top shape. If someone thinks that I am not up to the challenge, they are completely wrong. I greet every challenger and especially Charles Martin. “
“My strategy and my goal have not changed. I want to face the best and defeat the best. Whichever path I take, I get along well with it. The goal will remain the same, to become world champion.
“Everyone who knows me knows I don’t mess around in the gym. Getting hard hits is what I do best. I take it very seriously. If one day someone surpasses me, I say: do a good job and learn the lesson and will be even better next time. “
“I was able to help Carlos Negron with training, mainly because I know that he is fighting a Cuban opponent. I think that will help him and I wish him all the best on January 1st. “
“Nobody will be able to take away my dream of becoming world champion. I will continue to prepare for my next challenge against Charles Martin. Then I will continue to ascend from there. I have no reason to believe that my dream will not come true. “
“I am ready for war. I’ll get out of there and give all I have. I’m not worried about any economies of scale my opponent might have. My mentality is to just be ready and take on all challengers. “
“My name isn’t mentioned by other heavyweights because they all avoid me. I don’t know why they are avoiding me, but I’ll be ready when they call my name. “
Charles “Prince Charles” Martin
Martin didn’t start boxing until he was 22 years old. He played only 63 fights as an amateur and won, among other things, the gold medal at the National PAL Championships in 2012, where he unanimously defeated Andrew Coleman in the semifinals and Stephan Shaw on points in the final, and the silver medal at the Golden Gloves, where he won Joese Perez and Angelo Gutierrez each early and Elijah Thomas and Tyrell Wright each defeated on points and defeated in the final against Andrew Coleman on points.
The 1.96 meter tall southpaw with enormous punching power made his debut on October 27, 2012 with a classic knockout win in Round 1 against his compatriot Vashawn Tomlin in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. Five more classic knockout victories followed.
In 2013 Martin defeated Vincent Thompson (13-0-0) and Glendy Hernandez (10-0-0), who had been unbeaten until then. On April 16 of the following year he knocked out Alexander Flores (14-0-0), who had also been unbeaten until then, in a 10-round battle in the 4th round and thus secured the WBO-NABO title.
Martin defended this belt a total of four times against Kertson Manswell from Trinidad and Tobago, who has already been in the ring with people like Deontay Wilder and Bermane Stiverne (but had no chance against both), Raphael Zumbano Love, Tom Dallas and Vicente Sandez.
The Briton Tyson Fury defeated Wladimir Klitschko on November 28, 2015 and won the world championship titles of the associations WBO, WBA and IBF. On December 8 of the following month, he was stripped of the IBF title. The IBF had asked Fury to compete against the then mandatory challenger, the Ukrainian Vyacheslav Hlaskow; however, he preferred a rematch against Klitschko. Since Martin was placed in the IBF world rankings as number 2 behind Hlaskow, the IBF ordered a fight between him and Hlaskow for the vacant world title. This took place on January 16, 2016 in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. After two relatively even rounds (19:19, 18:20, 20:18), Hlaskow tore a cruciate ligament in round three and went down. Because of this injury, the Ukrainian had no choice but to give up; Martin was then declared the winner by technical knockout and thus obtained the IBF world champion belt.
On April 9, 2016, Martin lost in his first IBF title defense in London against the British Anthony Joshua by knocking out in the second round.
Charles Martin reported back in 2017 with two development fights, he beat Byron Polley through tKO in round 2 and Mike Marrone through tKO in round 1.
He boxed against Adam Kownacki from Poland in September 2018 at the Barclays Center in Los Angeles, USA. Martin lost the fight, which was scheduled for 10 rounds, unanimously on points.
This is what Charles “Prince Charles” Martin says about the fight against Luis Ortiz
“The training camp was wonderful. I work very hard. I’m used to that now. All I know is hard work I try my best every day. That’s what we do. “
“It’s the most focused thing I’ve done in my career. This fight is everything to me. Lots of people didn’t want to fight me. I pay tribute to Ortiz for standing up and taking on the fight. “
“People will be shocked by what I’m doing in this fight. I’ve always had what it takes and now I’m adding the main ingredient, which is all of my dedication. I know that is what it takes to become world champion again. “
“It’s been like night and day for me since I lost the title. I used to eat ‘fast food’ and now my diet is completely different. I’ve always worked hard, but now I’ve changed everything. I feel unstoppable. “
“Manny Robles helped me become a versatile fighter. I can do a lot more and have more tools in my arsenal. I’ve become a much more disciplined fighter both inside and outside the ring. “
“At the moment I’m just concentrating on Luis Ortiz. I cannot see beyond this struggle. I’m focusing on knocking out Luis Ortiz. I wake up in the morning and see Luis Ortiz. I’ll do this business on January 1st, then I can talk about the future.
“I’m in my prime right now. I am ready to compete. I don’t want to fight lower rated boxers. I want the best fights. I want to be two-time world champion and I have great expectations of myself. At this point in my career, I don’t want to waste any time. I’m ready to rock it and get started. “
The first fight of the New Year will take place on January 1st in Florida, USA between Luis Ortiz vs. Charles Martin.
The fight of two southpaws
For both Luis Ortiz and his opponent Charles Martin next Saturday, it is the last chance to reach for a title fight again. In the fight between two southpaws in the heavyweight division, which is extremely rare in the heavyweight division, Luis Ortiz, who is seven years older than the bookmakers, is the 5: 1 favorite. Ortiz lost only two fights in his entire professional career (by the way, just like his opponent Charles Martin), it was the two fights against the then reigning WBC world champion Deontay Wilder.
Erol Ceylan and Christian Hammer and the EC Boxing head coach.
Three Erol Ceylan boxers are boxing in the same event!
In the second main fight of this event, the EC boxing boxer Christian Hammer from Erol Ceylan’s team fights against the world class Cuban Frank Sanchez. Sanchez is trained by Canelo trainer Eddy Reynoso, who is now also the new trainer of former champion Andy Ruiz and is considered by many experts as the future world champion. It will be a tough fight for BDB-licensed Christian Hammer, but Hammer has nothing to lose and, as we know Hammer, he will give everything.
Ali Eren Demirezen and Erol Ceylan
In another heavyweight fight, another protégé of Erol Ceylan, Ali Eren Demirezen (14-1-0, 11 KO victories) meets Deontay Wilder’s former World Cup opponent, Gerald Washington (20-4-1, 13th Knockout victories). Here the Turk Ali Eren Demirezen has a great chance to defeat Washington and rise even further in the world rankings.
Victor Faust signing his contract with EC Boxing. Left Peter Hanraths and right Erol Ceylan.
And a third boxer from boxing promoter Erol Ceylan will step into the ring next Saturday in Florida, the jewel of the ECB boxing stable, the undefeated, two-time European amateurs champion in 8 fights, the 29-year-old Ukrainian Victor Fist. After his impressive knockout victory in Las Vegas, Victor Faust is fighting again at a big event in the USA and has the chance to recommend himself to the US audience there, because this time the fight by Victor Faust will also be shown live on the US TV shown. The transmitting US channel is ‘Fox Sports’.
