LAS VEGAS – Bill Algeo faces a dilemma before Saturday.
Algeo (14-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC), who is due to face Joanderson Brito at UFC on ESPN 32, is not sure he can make the walk. That’s because his opponent’s COVID-19 test came back inconclusive, and unless Brito is negative on his next attempt, he may not be able to fight.
It will be difficult for the UFC to scramble for a replacement opponent on a day’s notice if Brito is forced out, but if it were up to Algeo he would fight Giga Chikadze (14-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC), which is making headlines against Calvin Kattar.
“I was sort of hoping someone from Kattar’s squad would show up and I could fight Giga,” Algeo told MMA Junkie and other reporters on Wednesday’s pre-fight media day. . “It would be great. If the stars align, maybe it could happen. But then again, I shouldn’t wish ill will, and I don’t. But if they pass a test, it’s not the end of the world.
Algeo refers to a sparring session years ago at King MMA, where he claimed he got the better of Chikadze, who was trying to take his lead. Asked about Algeo during the media day, Chikadze refused to recognize him.
“No, he’s going to pretend he doesn’t know who I am, and I understand,” Algeo added. “But he knows.”
