Gregor Gillespie frustrated still waiting for Tony Ferguson

After an 18-month layoff, Gregor Gillespie returned in 2021 with a bonus knockout.

If the long absence was frustrating after a November 2019 knockout loss to Kevin Lee in which he broke his jaw in the first setback of his career, perhaps he has grown used to the feeling that ‘he has these days.

Gillespie (14-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) has not been booked for another fight since arriving from Diego Ferreira in May 2021. He told MMA Junkie he is trying to fight the former champion. acting lightweight Tony Ferguson – and accepted one from his side.

But for reasons Gillespie can’t understand, he said Ferguson didn’t seem interested. And he’s also not sure why legendary MMA math doesn’t work in his favor.

Beniel Dariush beat Ferreira with a split decision. But Gillespie knocked out Ferreira. Dariush fought with Ferguson and beat him and now has a potential title eliminator against Islam Makhachev coming up. So why didn’t Gillespie fight with Ferguson or someone of his caliber?

“I have been silent on the radio for the past five or six years. I don’t call people. I was adamant enough not to do it, ”Gillespie told MMA Junkie. “… I was offered fights. These are just fights that don’t interest me. I am by no means ancient. I m 35 years old. I don’t have so many years left in my career that I won’t fight guys who rank lower than me.

And maybe that’s what puts Gillespie between a rock and a hard place. His philosophy could be the same as Ferguson’s. Gillespie is No. 10 in the most recent official UFC lightweight ranking; Ferguson is No. 7.

But Gillespie said that, given that he and Ferguson fought recently around the same time, and everyone near them in the standings was already booked or unavailable, with Ferguson not signing on the line. dotted to fight him does not make sense to him.

“After beating Ferreira, they offered me Ferguson for the November card (in New York). I said yes, ”said Gillespie. “I did not have any answer. I contacted my manager. He said, ‘They don’t seem too excited to fight you.’ … We kept asking for the fight, and the same answer: “He doesn’t look thrilled, he doesn’t want the fight, blah blah blah.” … Then I see him calling (Michael) Chandler. It really pissed me off.

If Ferguson wants to fight a wrestler in Chandler, Gillespie was quick to point out that he had a varsity wrestling victory against him. Plus, Gillespie said, Chandler doesn’t struggle much in his recent MMA bouts.

“I don’t really know what the problem is – why Tony wouldn’t want to fight me,” Gillespie said. “I’m 14-1. I have 12 finishes. I only have one fight in the UFC that was not a finish. You can probably expect a fight like me and Tony, you are probably going to win $ 50,000 more. It should be some kind of fireworks fight. I really don’t see the downside of fighting. It is really, really frustrating.

With irritation bubbling over at not getting a card against Ferguson, Gillespie said he will fight Chandler – although he knows he may have to wait a bit after Chandler’s loss to Justin Geathje. in November.

“I also love Mike Chandler’s fight,” he said. “From the information I got on this, Mike Chandler has been in some wars – he needs a bit of a break. And I understand that. He had a few battles. You are going through a fight like him and (Justin) Gaethje did, you need a rest. I understand. But if there’s a fight he’s programmed into, he didn’t need such a long break. I asked for that.

“There are obviously guys who said my name and guys who want to fight me, but these aren’t the guys who are going to propel me to the ultimate goal here. Time is running out, so I want to get this thing moving. If I was 27 I would fight with the guys behind me. But it’s a weird place, I guess. So here we are. “
