Michael Page’s first shot at a Bellator title will come at home.
According to Bellator chairman Scott Coker, the promotion sees a welterweight title fight between new champion Yaroslav Amosov (26-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA) and Page (20-1 MMA, 16-1 BMMA) in the second quarter of 2022.
“We’re in the process of preparing for this fight with him and the MVP to fight in London early next year,” Coker told MMA Junkie.
Since suffering his first career loss to Douglas Lima in the semifinals of the Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix in 2019, “MVP” has won five straight wins en route to his long-awaited rematch with Lima. Page would get his revenge by edging out Lima at the Bellator 267 in October, but with the series tied one-on-one, Page wanted an immediate trilogy fight to end their rivalry for good.
But Coker is happy to see Page opt for a title shot instead and believes the Briton has plenty of time to settle his score with Lima.
“I know MVP has been going back and forth, do I want to fight Lima again, do I want to fight Amosov and then we said okay, go think about it,” Coker said. “Our opinion as a company is that you want to take the next step. You want to go fight for the belt now. It’s your time. If you don’t do it now, when are you going to do it? and then you can come back and fight Lima in the future. So for me, this is the right fight to fight. I think it will happen in the second quarter. It will be in London and it will be a huge fight there because he’s such a big star.
“Believe me, a lot of people say Amosov is so good and he is – yes, he’s so good and that’s why his record is undefeated. But MVP has a very unique style and he’s very hard to touch, to catch and it’s going to be interesting to see how Amosov handles that because he fights like a very goofy karate style fighter and it’s not like yours. normal MMA fighter who is just very straight forward, maybe a little more linear. He does a lot of crazy things and that’s why people love him, but that fight will take place at some point in 2022 for sure.
