Andre Onana has resumed training at Ajax after a doping suspension. The national champion has the goalkeeper train with Jong Ajax and other keepers for the time being.
Onana was not allowed to train at Ajax until September 4, after a positive doping test. He will also be allowed to play matches again in two months. Ajax is letting Onana train with the promise team for the time being because he does not want to extend his expiring contract. Onana can leave Ajax transfer-free after the season. Both parties have not reached an agreement on a new contract.
Ajax has registered Onana for the Champions League. But director of football affairs Marc Overmars sees no future for the goalkeeper in the first team for the time being. Trainer Erik ten Hag already has three goalkeepers with Maarten Stekelenburg, Remko Pasveer and Jay Gorter.
“We have decided that André will start goalkeeper training and group training at Jong Ajax,” Overmars said last week. “We have now moved on without him and have recruited two goalkeepers during his suspension. An experienced and a talented one, the latter with a view to our future. The selection has started the season and is in the middle of a group process.”
