BVB: Rose hopes for Zwayer’s return

BVB coach Marco Rose hopes for a return of referee Felix Zwayer. “I wish him a good and calm phase. With the result, I hope that he can enjoy playing football matches again,” Rose said before the game against SC Freiburg on Friday.

Zwayer took a break after the heated discussions about himself following the top match between BVB and Bayern Munich in early December (2:3). “Felix Zwayer wants to mentally come to his senses and reflect on the events in the aftermath of the Dortmund game,” said referee boss Lutz Michael Fröhlich.

The debate in Zwayer was sparked by young Dortmund star Jude Bellingham. The Englishman had verbally attacked the referee after the game against Bayern: “You give a referee who has already postponed matches the biggest game in Germany. What do you expect?”

Rose said on Thursday that BVB “felt that they had not been treated well”: “We had the impression that the referee’s performance was wrong.”

For Rose, criticism comes with it. “If you work in the area where we work, it is clear that you have to hear and read things about yourself again and again. You have to be able to deal with that,” says the BVB coach. He himself is “always ready for dialogue”.

Bellingham, who was fined £40,000 for his testimony, referred to Zwayer’s involvement in the manipulation scandal involving former referee Robert Hoyzer. Zwayer is still concerned that the allegation has not been settled.

The origin of the debate lies in 2004. At that time, according to the files, Zwayer had taken money from mastermind Hoyzer as an assistant. He later discovered the scandal and despite the ban, manipulation was never proven.
