Rummenigge: 2012 FC Bayern in a crisis situation

Commenting on FC Bayern’s situation in 2012 after two years without a title, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spoke of a “crisis situation”. He sees this as “decisive” for the FCB’s subsequent dominance with nine championships in a row.

“We all went on holiday very stupidly and were very disappointed,” Rummenigge said in an interview with kicker in the summer of 2012, when Bayern lost the cup final to BVB first and later the CL final to FC Chelsea.

“The sting was deep,” Rummenigge said, stating that the Bayern bosses were forced into action. One of the things that came about was the record transfer from Javi Martinez for around 40 million euros to Säbener Strasse.

Munich’s next dominance was later recognized by BVB in the person of Hans-Joachim Watzke. According to Rummenigge, the latter told him: “We made a big mistake: we irritated you too much, and it was clear that the answer was not long in coming…”
