SK Rapid suffered a 3-1 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb on Matchday 4 of the Europa League. A climb to the knockout stage is a long way off.
SK Rapid were unable to replicate the 2-1 home win over Dinamo Zagreb on October 21 Thursday night – on the contrary, the tide turned. “It will be an intense game again – we surprised Zagreb and now they want to turn things around,” Rapid coach Dietmar Kühbauer said even before the game – and that is how it should be.
At halftime, the hosts were leading 2-1 in accordance with their performance. Rapid went first through Christoph Knasmüllner – Robert Ljubicic was ideally playing deep – in the lead, but Dinamo then strengthened and equalized a few minutes later with Bruno Petkovic. The Dinamo striker was hiding to the right of the penalty area for a cross from Mislav Orsic, who first refueled at the baseline to the left of the box. Petkovic didn’t have much trouble at the far post to steer the ball into the right corner to make it 1-1.
Then the Croats had the game completely under control and Komnen Andric’s second hit was almost inevitable. Here again, the Croats held firm on the left side, as during the equalizer. Bartol Franjic then played the ball flat against the far post and Andric scored to make it 2-1 for the hosts. Due to the significantly larger proportion of play from Dinamo Zagreb, the lead at half-time was correct.
In the second half, Rapid built a sham dominance, but the equalizer could not be forced. In the end, the Croats even set their sights on Josip Sutalo. After a free kick from the right into the penalty area at the far post, the tall Dinamo player came completely free with a header and placed it in the right corner to make the score 3-1 for the hosts.
Kühbauer: West Ham? “Again the audience behind you”
“It certainly would have been more in there,” Rapid coach Dietmar Kühbauer said after the final whistle at ServusTV, the third defeat in the group stage. “We were in the lead and fell behind due to small mistakes. Zagreb suddenly didn’t have a chance to lead 2-1. I can’t explain that to myself. You never had the feeling that they were controlling the game. We could have made at least one point. “
The 1: 3 was the killing blow for Kühbauer, but “the young boys did a good job. But you can’t buy anything with that”. In order to preserve the chances of promotion, points have to be found against West Ham: “Then we have the spectators behind us again. We know West Ham is clearly the favorite. But other favorites have stumbled with us already. “
Rapid will continue in the league on Sunday against powerful Wolfsbergers – in the Europa League, duels with West Ham (H) and KRC Genk (A) await at the end.
