If the signing of Lionel Messi at PSG is the media event that swept everything in its path, is it the biggest transfer of the summer?
Nothing is less sure. Two major operations took place in the Premier League. European champion Chelsea signed Romelu Lukaku for 115 million euros. After his failures in England with the Blues already, in 2011, then at Manchester United, between 2017 and 2019, the Belgian striker finally realized his full potential at Inter Milan winning the title of champion of Italy and the status of serial scorer of Calcio. He returned through the front door to England and in the process became the player who generated the most cumulative transfer fees in the history of football: 327 million euros!
The second major operation of the summer in the Premier League is the recruitment of Jack Grealish by Manchester City for 117 million euros, a record sum for the club.
So of course, we can nevertheless consider that the recruitment of Lionel Messi by PSG remains the main transfer of the year. But from a financial point of view, this is clearly not the case. The Argentinian arrived free. Not the slightest penny in transfer fees. Better still, with the sales of his swimsuits, he has already reimbursed his salary!
