Formula 1 is heading to Qatar for the first time this season. The Losail International Circuit will act as a substitute for this year, but from 2023 Qatar will be on the calendar for no less than ten years. Whether that will also be at Losail remains to be seen, but for now Losail will at least be the scene of a Grand Prix this year. But what exactly does that circuit in Qatar look like? FPAL has already completed a virtual round.
The Losail International Circuit is well known for the MotoGP fanatics. The circuit has been the setting for the season opening of the premier class of two-wheelers since 2004 and regularly produces fireworks thanks to the enormous slipstream at start/finish. Losail is 5.4 kilometers long and has sixteen turns, ten to the right and six to the left. It is a fluid circuit for the motorcycles, but also certainly presents challenges with the heavy braking zones. For Formula 1, it will be a very fast circuit, as appears from the virtual lap. Overtaking could be expected in the first corner, but the drivers could also try it in turns 4, 6 and 16.
