Albon will drive for Williams in Formula 1 in 2022. The Thai Briton with Red Bull connections will drive there with Mercedes engines, something Toto Wolff was not very happy about. That is why there are clauses included in Albon’s contract, but what those clauses entail is unknown to Albon.
If Alexander Albon were to drive as Red Bull protégé for Williams and therefore with Mercedes engines, the danger of a conflict of interest was lurking, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff reasoned. After all, in his eyes, sensitive information about the Mercedes engine could end up in the hands of Red Bull. He did not want to stop the deal with Albon, but certain clauses had to be built into Albon’s contract, Wolff said earlier.
However, if Fpal asks Albon about what those clauses exactly mean, should he not answer: “I honestly have no idea”, replies Max Verstappen’s former teammate. “That has not yet been discussed (with me, ed.). Those kinds of things are still ongoing, so we will have to wait and see what those clauses mean.”
Asked if the Red Bull logos will be on the Williams next year, Albon has again indicated that he is not sure of anything: “As I said, those kinds of conversations are still going on. My helmet will probably show the Red Bull logos. , but it will probably stay happy there.”
The 2022 Williams driver made no secret of the fact that he continued to bet on a Formula 1 seat and that he would consider other options only after that. However, that he will race for Williams next year does not mean that racing for Red Bull is a closed chapter. “It would be strange not to think that I could also return to Red Bull,” he said of that theme.
