Alexander Albon will return to the grid as a full-time driver in 2022 after a one-year absence. He may join Williams next season, where he will replace the departing George Russell. The latter has therefore already put together a welcome package.
Russell will finally be allowed to join the Mercedes team in 2022 as a teammate of Lewis Hamilton. The Briton has gained experience with the Mercedes team over the past three seasons and has achieved some fantastic results there. In recent years he has developed into an experienced driver who knows how to lead a team. He is therefore seen as the future world champion of the German racing stable.
Because Russell moves to Mercedes, a spot has become available at Williams. At first it was assumed that this chair would go to Valtteri Bottas or Nyck de Vries, but nothing turned out to be less true. Behind the scenes, Williams was busy talking with Albon and Red Bull Racing. The Thai Briton has had to cut all official ties with Red Bull, but has already been told there may still be opportunities for him in the future. Until then, he can at least gain some more experience at Williams.
Russell has already given Albon a welcome package so that he can feel right at home at the British racing stable next year. For example, he received George Russell Merchandise, white pants and two access passes ‘because he always loses everything’. “I don’t think I’ll need the shirt of course,” Albon jokes. When Russell asks why this is so, the new Williams driver answers: “Because you always walk around without a shirt.”
