Alex Albon will return to the Formula 1 grid next year after being condemned to watch for a year as a Red Bull reservist. It wasn’t easy, as he admits in retrospect.
Alex Albon was not discouraged by the loss of the Red Bull Racing cockpit at the end of 2020. The young Thai-Englishman, who had to make room for Sergio Pérez, contented himself with the reservist role and impressed with the tireless support he provided for the regular drivers in the simulator.
A return to the team from Milton Keynes was still not possible, after all, his Mexican successor had proven himself. With the team AlphaTauri, the driver pairing with Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda was already established, so Albon had to look for a cockpit outside the Red Bull family.
He got help from Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner and Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko. The efforts were not without success – after all, Albon was able to look forward to the Williams commitment. To Formula1 he explained: «A month before that it didn’t seem to be moving in the right direction, but then everything happened very quickly.»
He himself concentrated entirely on his work, said the 25-year-old. “You can’t control people’s opinions, you can only control what you do, and for me that meant getting involved as much as possible and doing the best possible job on and off the track. But of course it’s hard to prove yourself when you’re not in the car. ”
“It was tough, when you’ve been to Formula 1 and then have to watch, it’s tricky to sit down and relax. I’ve done better over the year. But in the first race it was torture. But then I found a rhythm and the whole thing only reinforced my desire to return, » added Albon.
