Nyck de Vries is still in the race for a seat in the premier class of motorsport. The Dutchman is in contact with Alfa Romeo and hopes to get a chance there to replace Antonio Giovinazzi. De Vries has given his business card in recent years and would deserve a spot in F1.
In 2019 Nyck de Vries became champion in Formula 2 and in 2021 the Dutch racing driver won the world title in Formula E. With two prestigious titles under his belt, a switch to the premier class of motorsport would be a logical consequence, but there is still no certainty about that. De Vries currently only has a chance of a seat at Sauber Alfa Romeo, after Williams decided to give George Russell’s empty seat to Max Verstappen’s former Red Bull teammate, Alexander Albon. At Alfa Romeo, the successful de Vries is not the only driver hoping to take over Antonio Giovinazzi’s seat.
In the first place, the Italian is still in the running to keep his seat at Alfa Romeo. Giovinazzi is not performing badly and the sympathetic driver left earlier Fpal know that his focus for next year is still on Formula 1. Another major competitor of de Vries seems to be the Chinese Formula 2 driver Guanyu Zhou. His name is often associated with team boss Frederic Vasseur’s team. The French team boss, in turn, showed in an exclusive interview with Fpal know that he will not make a decision for the time being. Vasseur wants to wait until the end of September to take stock of the performance of the talents in the entry classes towards Formula 1.
That means that there are logically even more candidates to fill the last spot at Alfa Romeo. Alfa Romeo’s first driver in 2022 will be Valtteri Bottas and Toto Wolff will no doubt hope to get de Vries on the side of the Finn. A survey at Monza’s paddock shows that many prominent people are hoping for a seat for the Dutchman, because he has made a big impression in recent years by performing in both Formula 2 and Formula E.
If Alfa Romeo does not opt for de Vries, it means for the 26-year-old driver that he will also compete in Formula E next year. The question is whether he will again have a chance at an F1 seat after that year or whether most F1 teams will continue with the drivers who have been able to get used to the completely new F1 cars that will be used from 2022. At the moment it is difficult to estimate who will take the 2022 seat at Alfa Romeo. It is even more difficult to estimate what the chances of de Vries are in 2023.
The fact is that with his performances and titles won, de Vries would deserve to drive in Formula 1 in 2022. If that doesn’t happen, however, there is also a growing chance that we will never see the Dutchman racing in the premier class of motorsport. At the same time, that scenario would demonstrate the weakness of the system in the entry-level classes towards Formula 1. De Vries also won the Formula Renault title in the past and, with all his titles in his pocket, should form the textbook example of the desired Formula 1 driver.
The titles appear to offer no certainty of ending up in Formula 1, although it is hoped for de Vries and the Dutch motorsport fans that Alfa Romeo will give the Dutchman a chance. Should Alfa Romeo choose another driver, the end of de Vries’s F1 dream seems to come to an end. Although the current Formula E world champion is far from giving up.
