Fernando Alonso, at forty years old, is one of the most experienced men on the grid. Another experienced hand in the business is Kimi Raikkonen, who is retiring this year. Alonso talks about what the Finn is really like.
Alonso and Raikkonen made their debut at the same time at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix and the two could never dream of the successes they had at the time. “When you debut at that moment, you have no clear idea what the future holds. It is clear that we both had a fantastic time in Formula 1. We both won a championship. In 2001 we could not have known that we were both like this would be successful. But I’m glad I got to share so many years with Kimi,” he tells the Beyond the Grid podcast.
Raikkonen different outside the circuit
The experienced Spaniard thinks that a lot of people have the wrong image of the Finn, looking at how he is in daily life. “He’s very honest. He doesn’t play games and is what you see. Occasionally we do see a mask of him with the behavior that he acts very cold and doesn’t talk much. He’s different from the inside. He’s outside the F1 for nothing The Iceman, from the inside he is very warm. Outside the racing you see a very different Kimi.”
Laughing at ‘fake world’
Alonso and Raikkonen also like to see each other off the track, says Alonso. “We can certainly laugh and talk about moments on the track. We meet at airports, outside the paddock and in restaurants, sometimes even at a party. He is one of the guys I always look forward to seeing. Like me already said, you can talk to him on many different topics. He is straightforward. How we behave on the grid is very different from how we are in real life. On Sunday nights we are just normal people, without all the glitter and glamour. Then we can laugh at how ‘fake’ this Formula 1 world really is,” concludes the two-time world champion.
