The Qatar Grand Prix gave Alpine its second podium of the year. Sergio Perez failed to overtake Fernando Alonso in the final stage of the race and as a result, the Spaniard was back on the Formula 1 podium after 7 years.
The Alpine team has clearly made steps and Alonso sees a bright future. “It is difficult to predict what will happen in the coming years, but I would like to fight with them (Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, ed.)”, he told, among others RacingNews365.
In 2022 there will be new technical regulations and that offers opportunities for the French racing stable, Alonso thinks. “Whoever makes a good car next year. I think everyone has to start over and it’s up to us to make a fast car.”
Alonso is ready for F1 2022
“It won’t be like this year, that was more of a continuation of last season. But in 2022 everyone will have the same papers, so we have to play it smarter and hopefully build a fast car. When we’re in that position, then feel I’m strong. I’m ready to fight and we’ll see.”
It’s been a while since Alonso was on the podium in Formula 1. The Spaniard finished second in the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2014, then still ahead of Ferrari. “Your career goes up and down sometimes,” said the current Alpine driver as he reflected on his time in the sport.
“I had wonderful moments two or three years ago winning Le Mans, winning the Endurance World Championship and so on. But now that I’m back in F1 and preparing for the new rules in 2022 it feels very good to have this podium now.”
