Fernando Alonso has thoroughly enjoyed his first podium in seven years. The veteran Alpine driver dreams of continuing on this footing with a view to 2022.
Alonso was allowed to make it to the podium for the first time since Hungary in 2014 and that caused great joy for the passionate Spaniard. “I’ve waited so long for this. This stage is number 98, but the time between 97 and 98 was so very long. I am grateful to everyone who waited for this and trusted that I would one day be on stage again.” Alonso cheers to Dazn F1.
Podium with Verstappen and Hamilton
“I was allowed to share the podium with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, that they are not just two drivers”, Alonso feels honored. “My tires felt good, but there were some punctures in the field. The team told me to watch out. I had to take it easy because the team was afraid my tire would explode. It was fun, we have got the job done,” he laughs.
Third title still a goal
The Spaniard’s hunger has still not been quenched and he hopes to be able to build further with Alpine in third place. “I have returned to eventually be able to compete again for championships. 2022 offers everyone a restart for everyone. This season was necessary to get used to Formula 1 again. Hopefully one day I can reach 100 podiums. I hope the The period between numbers 98 and 99 is a lot shorter than the period before,” he concludes.
