For Otmar Szafnauer this means that the path to Alpine is completely open. The former Aston Martin captain could fill the position at Alpine, despite the fact that he has repeatedly dismissed the rumor as a ‘lie’. It wouldn’t be the first time Szafnauer hasn’t been completely honest with the press.

In 2020, the American also announced that Sergio Pérez would definitely stay with the team in 2021, after which it suddenly became known that the Mexican would be replaced by Sebastian Vettel. This eventually opened the door for Pérez to Red Bull Racing, where he helped Max Verstappen achieve the Formula 1 world title.
