Valtteri Bottas is looking forward to working with his new teammate Guanyu Zhou next season at Alfa Romeo. The Finn emphasizes that he had no influence in the choice and trusted his team that they would make the best choice.
Last Tuesday, Alfa Romeo announced that it would say goodbye to Antonio Giovinazzi after this season. Formula 2 driver Guanyu Zhou takes over his seat and thus becomes the teammate of Valtteri Bottas, who is saying goodbye to Mercedes after five years. The Finn does like the collaboration with Zhou, the first Chinese Formula 1 driver ever.
“I will of course welcome him to Alfa Romeo next year,” said Bottas. “I look forward to working with him,” said the Finn, admitting that he doesn’t really know the Chinese yet. “But of course I saw him in Formula 2. He has been active there for a while and this year in particular he has had some good races, good results and good consistency. He is second in the championship and has taken some victories, so he knows how to drive. He is quite young, but has had good years in the single-seaters. So the potential is definitely there,” Bottas praises his future teammate.
Alfa Romeo has therefore opted for experience and a rookie with the Bottas-Zhou line-up. Bottas is in any case ready to help Zhou in his debut season. “Every Formula 1 team has smart people who guide you. Of course I will try to help him because we have to work together as a team. Hopefully we get a lot of points and good results and we are moving in the right direction. So I’m looking forward to that,” said the Mercedes driver.
Bottas emphasizes that he had no influence in the choice of Zhou, but he was constantly kept informed of the course of events. “I sometimes got some updates about what was going on and what was likely to happen. I had already received the information for the announcement.” In addition, Bottas did not believe his opinion was necessary. “I left it completely to Fred (Vasseur, Alfa Romeo team principal, ed.), I trust he knows what is best for the team.”
