Bottas had no doubts about future in F1: ‘There was always only one option’

Valtteri Bottas has never really considered quitting Formula 1. The Finnish driver is making the switch from Mercedes to Alfa Romeo this year. The ten-time race winner wanted a contract of longer than a year with the German racing stable, but Mercedes did not want to offer this. Alfa Romeo reached out and is now Bottas’ home.

The driver has been allowed to drive for the dominant Mercedes for five years and has also won the constructors’ championship every year. Next season the chances are a lot smaller to be able to fight for the win every race. “Realistically, I know I will end up in a very different situation,” Bottas told the British branch of GPFans.

The Alfa Romeo driver says he had a lot of time to think about his new contract. ‘I took the time to process everything. Nothing was decided in one day.’ For a moment, Bottas doubted his future in Formula 1. ‘Of course you do think about that. But there was only one option for me. I still love the sport and the competition.’

Bottas looking forward to new project

The Finn has previously worked with Alfa Romeo team principal Frédéric Vasseur. The former Mercedes driver believes in the Swiss racing stable’s proposed project. “Alfa Romeo’s project has a long-term focus and that gives me a lot of motivation. I’m going to do my best to help the team and it will be a reward if we show good things,” said Bottas.
