Bottas impressed with Hamilton: “He has developed every year”

Valtteri Bottas has been allowed to sit next to Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes for the past five seasons. During that period he saw the seven-time world champion always grow and develop his talent in order to stay at the top of Formula 1.

The Finn will drive for the Alfa Romeo team next season, after five years with Mercedes. In that time he has learned a lot from teammate Hamilton. Despite the many world titles, he still saw the Briton working on himself, so that he could remain one of the best.

“Doesn’t go automatically”

Speaking to Formula1.com, Bottas explains what he thinks is so good about Hamilton now: “You know, with Lewis, what was really impressive is that he has been able to develop every year. He has so much experience in Formula 1, but yet he has been able to always learn more, get better and better.” Bottas also had that drive to perform, but that is not obvious: “Of course I have developed as a driver every year, but so has Lewis, and that is not automatic. He works for it, because he knows that the competition is always getting bigger.”

“He keeps getting better”

Last year Hamilton had to watch with sadness that the world championship was decided in favor of Max Verstappen. It remains to be seen whether the Briton can take a shot at his eighth world title. For example, the new regulations could throw the relations back into disarray. It will not be Hamilton’s work ethic, according to Bottas: “He always wants more out of himself and the team around him, so that has been the same every year, he keeps getting better.”
