Bottas not sad about missed championship: “I did everything I could”

Valtteri Bottas is sure he won’t regret missing out on the world title during his five years at Mercedes. The Finn is looking forward to the 2022 season with fresh courage and says “don’t sit down and be sad” during the winter.

Bottas sees much of his five years at Mercedes as ‘failed’, having been unable to get hold of the ‘big piece of gold’ as he describes it. But looking back, he thinks he “did everything he could” to become world champion. His time at Mercedes is now over and the Finn will continue at Alfa Romeo.

Not sad

When asked whether missing the title will continue to haunt him, Bottas soberly answers in an interview with GPFans. “With a new chapter in my career with a new team, I don’t think it will be a problem at all,” said the former Mercedes driver. “I have a lot of things to work on, so I don’t think I’ll be grieving and sad in the winter. I think I’ll just look forward to an exciting future.”

Big change

Bottas is thus looking ahead to his time at Alfa Romeo. He has signed there for two more years, which should give him more stability than his ongoing one-year contracts with Mercedes. “It’s a new chapter, a bit like when I started Formula 1 at Williams, or when I went to Mercedes,” Bottas analyzes. “Now it’s time again for a big change, a change in the team and a new role that they have promised to give me. For me that is very interesting and exciting,” concludes Bottas.
