Valtteri Bottas had a mixed weekend in Qatar. He was the fastest in the second and third free practice, but could not get further than third place in qualifying. He then had to stop the race early due to a damaged car.
Lewis Hamilton’s teammate at Mercedes tells Ilta Sanomat that his car felt completely different after the first two practices. Hamilton didn’t seem to be bothered by that, he managed to take pole position and also went home with the win.
Loss of momentum
“My car was not quite the same as on Friday and also different from Lewis’s,” Bottas said. The Finn was therefore surprised at the loss of momentum. He now understands what it was about, but he doesn’t reveal that: “I found the reason, but I can’t give any details.”
The Mercedes team appeared to be too slow after the Mexican Grand Prix to be able to fight with Red Bull Racing. Those relationships have now been completely reversed. Bottas said: “We learned a lot and even managed to fine-tune our cars. That worked in Qatar, so hopefully in Saudi Arabia too.”
