Brown saw Hamilton and Verstappen fight off ‘most toxic’ title battle since Senna and Prost

Zak Brown says the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen was the most toxic battle since Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. The hard fight between the two drivers has finally brought some tension back to Formula 1, so fans will hope that such a fight will repeat itself in 2022. In any case, the CEO of McLaren has enjoyed 2021.

“It was a great year from start to finish,” Brown told’s Brazilian arm. The 50-year-old McLaren CEO explains what he loved about 2021. “We had a lot of stories, starting with the battle between Lewis and Max for the title. I haven’t seen such a toxic battle between two drivers and teams since Senna and Prost.’ The teams and drivers regularly fought each other, which also made the battle even more beautiful.

Brown: ‘Don’t believe Formula 1 has ever been so exciting’

More title fights have been fought after Senna and Prost, of course. For example, in 2008 there was the fight between Hamilton and Filipe Massa and then there was another fight between Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. The fight in 2016 between Nico Rosberg and Hamilton was also a great fight, but it couldn’t match 2021. “They (Hamilton and Verstappen ed.) absolutely hated each other,” says Brown. Verstappen has even said after the season that he and Hamilton sometimes hate each other.

Fortunately, the title fight did not disappoint for a moment, as the balance of power is shifting. “At first we thought Mercedes would win, but Max also dominated for a while,” said the McLaren CEO. Still, the American does not want to limit the 2021 season only to Hamilton and Verstappen. “In Monza it was great because McLaren got a one-two win there.” Ocon’s win and Williams’ surprising results also contributed to the successful season. “I don’t believe Formula 1 has ever been this exciting,” Brown said.
