Button expects a bigger role within Williams in 2022: ‘I want to help the drivers’

Jenson Button expects to play a more important role in the Williams team next season. The former driver has had an advisory role within the team since 2020, but was unable to fully perform this due to the corona measures in Formula 1. Now the Briton hopes that these measures will be relaxed somewhat in 2022. Then Button will spend more time with the drivers of the team.

“My role has been very limited in recent years,” the single world champion told Motorsport.com. Button had to spend his time outside the garage and was therefore unable to talk to the drivers. “I was simply not allowed to talk to the drivers because I was not allowed to enter their bubble. That is a shame for both parties. I expect to be able to spend a lot more time with them next year.”

Because the ex-driver was not allowed to set foot inside the garages, he mainly had contact with Dave Robson (head of vehicle performance, ed.) and team boss Jost Capito. ‘I was mainly the mouthpiece of a few people within the team. I saw those people especially in Grove and of course during the Grand Prix weekends where I was also there. There I talked a lot with Robson, Capito and the marketing team.’

Button wants to support young drivers

Prior to 2021 Williams’ results were nothing to write home about. Still, Button sees that there is a lot of talent in the pipeline with the British team. ‘It’s a great team. I’m going to spend a lot of time with the riders next year. They have a lot of young talents in the team and I want to support them when they are in the simulator, for example. I won’t drive myself, as much as I want to. I think that with my experience I can really contribute to the team’, concludes Button.
