Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner expects Lewis Hamilton to catch up quickly in the Turkish GP. He says, “The best way to beat him is to stay in front.” He hopes for the help from Pierre Gasly.
Red Bull Racing star Max Verstappen did not manage to match the pace of the Mercedes rivals in Istanbul qualifying, the Dutchman was more than three tenths of the fastest time of Lewis Hamilton, who started the race from 11th place on the grid because of his new internal combustion engine must take. This means that the 23-year-old can climb into the 16th test of strength as third fastest from the first row. Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Pérez was even more than eight tenths off the top, he finished seventh and moved up to sixth starting position.
Nevertheless, Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner praised the team from Milton Keynes: “I think the guys did a good job overnight. We had a few worries that we had to resolve and the whole engineering team on the track and in Milton Keynes did a great job making that progress. ”
Regarding the lack of pace of Pérez, who was almost four tenths slower on his fastest Q3 lap than Pierre Gasly from sister team AlphaTauri, the Briton said: “He was very disappointed because his Q2 time was quite decent on the medium tires . He just had trouble on the soft tires because he showed too much understeer. We have to understand why that was the case. ”
“But the racing strategy we chose for him should help him move forward,” added the 47-year-old. And with a view to the speed advantage of the star drivers, he said: “It will definitely be interesting. Lewis looked faster today than in the previous sessions. Mercedes seems to be doing very well here, so he’ll probably make it up quickly. But we have to concentrate on our race and make sure that strategy, stability and all other factors are right. ”
Horner emphasized: “The best way to beat him is to stay in front. We are fully focused on our race and will try to get the maximum number of points with both cars. I hope that we will be closer in the race than in qualifying. They are very fast on a lap, we will see tomorrow whether they can hold that for a race distance. ”
In the race, he is also hoping for the help of AlphaTauri talent Pierre Gasly, who was fifth fastest in the final training and is allowed to race from 4th position. “Pierre’s performance is remarkable, he is always in great shape on Saturdays. Hopefully he can get good points in the race too. We would of course very much appreciate it if he managed to keep at least one Mercedes behind him.”
