Motorsport is to a large extent a matter of the mind. The two title contenders Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen also know that. Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner doesn’t think Max will be fooled.
In the battle for a Formula 1 World Championship title, racing drivers dig deep into their bag of tricks. In the 15th year of his GP career, Lewis Hamilton has washed up all hands, and he knows exactly how to fiddle around on the media piano. The attempt to put your opponent under pressure and thus destabilize them is almost as old as the first duel between two pilots.
In Sochi, Mercedes star Hamilton said: “I still remember how I fought my first world championship fight, and of course there was a lot of steam built up.”
Max Verstappen reacted coldly: “That just shows how little he knows me. That’s fine. I concentrate entirely on myself. ” The Dutchman ironically: “But it’s true, I’m so excited that I can’t sleep, it’s so terrible to fight for the title.”
Then Max got serious again: “No, anyone who knows me knows how relaxed I am with all these things, I don’t care. It’s the best feeling to have a great car that you can drive for victory in every race. It doesn’t matter whether you lead the World Cup or not.”
Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner attests to Verstappen: “Max is not distracted by anything, psychological games leave him cold. Lewis likes to try to crawl a little under his opponent’s skin, but Max doesn’t bite. If you point your finger at someone, you have to expect the same thing to happen to you. ”
“Max is fighting against the most successful of all Formula 1 drivers, he’s only 24 and has so many years ahead of him. Before this season he was an outsider. He enjoys this challenge and he has the advantage of the youth on his side. Time does not stand still for anyone. Lewis has achieved so much in his career and is a phenomenal champion, but there is always a next generation to come.”
