From 2010 to 2013, Sebastian Vettel won four world titles in a row with Red Bull. In the years that followed, he won a few more races for Ferrari, but in recent years he has failed to compete for podiums on a regular basis. Not in his last year at Ferrari and certainly not at Aston Martin.
David Coulthard mentions that from time to time, but he is not thanked for that: “Vettel no longer looks the same as during his shining period at Red Bull. He is no longer the same driver,” said Coulthard in conversation with Kronen Zeitung. “I don’t talk about that with Vettel himself, but with his press lady Britta. Said then says to me ‘you are not nice to Vettel’.”
“I then think ‘what do you see that I don’t see?’ I’m just stating what I see and that is Vettel was beaten at Ferrari by his team-mate and he is on par with his team-mate at Aston Martin. When he won I thought ‘wow, this is great, what a machine!’ , but now that he doesn’t win, I just think ‘disappointing’. I find that a bit confusing.”
Coulthard understands the objections to his criticism, because he was of course an F1 driver himself: “Then you don’t mind if you are praised, but you don’t like it if someone says something that is less positive.”
“I don’t really know what to say about Sebastian at the moment. He races in Formula 1. And off the track he tells us that we have to pick up trash and get on the bike a little more often. But Sebastian doesn’t have to. to tell them, those are things I do anyway.”
