Dakar Rally: Spectacular newcomer makes a brutal shot at victory in cars

At the cars we come across some trusted, big names. Stephane Peterhansel, who won the Dakar Rally for the fourteenth(!) time in 2021, remains the teammate of Carlos Sainz Sr. The father of the Ferrari Formula 1 driver took third place in the general classification in 2021. Last year the two drove a buggy from Mini, this year they will act on behalf of the brand new Audi factory team. The Audi is equipped with a fully electric drive, unique in the Dakar Rally.

A third Audi is driven by DTM and rallycross legend Mattias Ekstrom, who is taking part in the most famous rally for the second time. The main opponent for the Audi trio will undoubtedly be Toyota. The Japanese are represented by, among others, Nasser Al-Attiyah (second in 2021) and Giniel de Villiers.

Bernhard ten Brinke has left that factory formation, but is taking over the seat at Overdrive from Erik van Loon, who was affected by Covid19. Maybe not a favorite for the overall victory, but with the fans: Tim and Tom Coronel! To underline the ambitions, they are driving for the first time with an already proven concept: the Century Racing CR6 in a striking color scheme (see photo above).

You can count men like Nani Roma, Yazeed Al Rajhi and Jakub Przygonski among the outsiders. They start with a Prodrive Hunter, a Toyota Hilux and a Mini respectively. WRC great Sebastien Loeb is also back on the entry list with the Prodrive of Bahrain Raid Xtreme. He is still waiting for his first major Dakar success, but should not be counted among the top favorites.
