Ecclestone thinks Vettel can show his real speed at Red Bull

Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone believes Sebastian Vettel should return to the Red Bull Racing team. According to the Brit, that is the only way to determine how good the German driver actually is. The four-time world champion currently rides with Aston Martin, but was unable to break any pots last season. Some people think Vettel should think about ending his Formula 1 career.

The Aston Martin driver is still immensely popular with Formula 1 fans. Despite this, the driver’s speed has been questioned in recent years. Ecclestone shares this view. “He’s not in a competitive car, so it makes sense that we don’t know if he’s fast anymore,” the 91-year-old Briton told F1Insider. “So it’s hard to say if he’s still as good as he used to be. Actually, he should return to Red Bull.”

In 2015, Vettel made the switch to the Ferrari team. At the Italian racing stable, the driver was not able to achieve the same successes as at Red Bull. The four-time world champion managed to finish first fourteen times and seemed to have good papers for the world championship in 2017. From 2019 it went downhill for the German driver, as teammate Charles Leclerc managed to beat him consistently. In 2020 it became clear that the marriage between the driver and Ferrari was over.

Vettel’s retirement

Vettel will drive for the Aston Martin team from 2021. Although his contract has been extended for 2022, the driver is not yet certain of a seat in 2023. There has been speculation about a possible departure from the sport. “Vettel has to stop whenever he wants to,” Ecclestone said. “No one will have to tell him when to stop,” said the former Formula 1 boss.
