Valtteri Bottas will replace Kimi Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo in 2022. Bottas’ compatriot Raikkonen will leave Formula 1 at the end of the 2021 season. In an exclusive interview with this site, Alfa Romeo team principal Frederic Vasseur gives his expectations of Bottas.
Frederic Vasseur has high hopes for Valtteri Bottas at Alfa Romeo. The Alfa Romeo F1 team boss thinks Bottas’ experience should push his team further forward on the grid. “Over the past three or four years, Valtteri has always finished in the top three in the championship battle. He has also always shown that he is always competitive against his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton. In qualifying, Bottas is always close to his goal. teammate”, Vasseur tells himself Fpal very positive about his future driver.
“In addition to the speed that Valtteri has, the Finn is looking for a project in which he can take on the leadership role. That is important, because in my view it is not just about the absolute speed of a driver. We are for the coming years. “We are looking for a leader and we think Valtteri can fill that role with us. You also have to have a leader in your team, the history of Formula 1 has shown that.”
“All successful projects in F1 over the past 25 years have been built around one driver. Renault had Fernando Alonso, Red Bull did it with Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari with Michael Schumacher and Mercedes with Hamilton. We must therefore also build our project around one driver and we think we have brought in the right person with Bottas.”
This partly explains why Alfa Romeo has decided to sign Bottas immediately for several years. “We have opted for a multi-year contract because we are both looking for the same things. For example, Valtteri wants to go for a project where he feels there is stability. It’s not about feeling comfortable, it’s just nice to to work together for several years. That is also what we are looking for, especially with the new regulations that will be introduced in Formula 1 next year.”
