Alain Prost finds it difficult to designate a favorite for the 2021 world title. According to him, both Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen deserve the title, although he would love it if the Limburger took off with the title. However, he does not yet dare to say who will eventually become champion. “First of all, it has to do with the combination of driver and car,” says Prost in the Fastlane podcast.
“Lewis has a lot more experience and knows how to win a championship, but on the other hand Max is very young and very fast. In previous years he made some mistakes, but now he is stronger than ever “He’s about the same level as Lewis and that’s exactly what you need when you can win your first championship. You never know if you’re going to have a second chance.”
Can Hamilton capture an eighth title?
Prost puts that more or less the same applies to Hamilton. Verstappen can take his first title, but his title rival can break Michael Schumacher’s astonishing record by scoring an eighth world title. “That is of course also the motivation Lewis needs,” continues the former driver. “To achieve what he can achieve. This (the title fight, ed.) is in any case the best for Formula 1. It is exceptional for our sport and I hope it continues into Abu Dhabi.”
The Alpine advisor says he does not want to choose a favorite for the title, but does say that Verstappen could have been champion already. “I remember saying in Silverstone that this race key was for the world championship. If Max had won the race there, he would have gained a lot of points and he would have been champion by now.”
“But that just goes to show that it’s a long season. You can’t miss opportunities because you never know what will happen. I would really love it if Max became world champion because he is so young and earns it so much. On the other hand, Lewis also shows exceptional things. Let’s just see what happens.”
