IndyCar star Colton Herta is a candidate for second F1 place at Alfa Romeo, but does not have enough super license points: Fernando Alonso demands changes
Colton Herta is currently a hotly traded stock in the Formula 1 driver market. In the course of the upcoming deal between Andretti and Sauber, the IndyCar driver could soon serve in the paddock of the premier class. One person there has a high opinion of the performance of the pilots in the US formula series: Fernando Alonso.
“I think we all have a lot of respect. Or, we respect all drivers in every category. I think they are the best in their business, in their discipline, in their driving style, which is different in every category,” replied the two-man Formula 1 world champion when asked whether the IndyCar stars are underestimated in the European premier class.
Fernando Alonso: Colton Herta is “very talented”
Since his IndyCar debut at the 2018 finals in Sonoma, 21-year-old Herta has been part of the young guard who is heating up the established stars around Scott Dixon and Will Power. That year he won the two final races at Laguna Seca and Long Beach. In addition, he dominated in Nashville, for example, but did not reward himself there with the victory.
“I think he’s a very good driver. Very talented, very young,” praised Alonso. “With Andretti he has a very good organization behind him. He will certainly fit into Formula 1. But each of us has different plans for his career. I don’t know what Colton has on his mind at the moment, because I’m sure that he’s happy with the IndyCars. ”
As of now, Herta would contest another season for Andretti Autosport in the coming year. This year he was the spearhead of the team in fifth place overall. His full-time teammates Alexander Rossi, Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe finished the season in tenth, 17th and 20th overall.
Alonso couldn’t blame Herta if he wanted to continue driving in the USA: “Sometimes there isn’t just one goal in motorsport. Motorsport is much more than Formula 1, even if we are here in this bubble … some people think, that this is the absolute top. Which it probably is, but there are still other super categories. ”
Super license points prevent Formula 1 changes
But a change to Formula 1 is anything but impossible at this point in time. There is one problem, however: Herta does not have enough points to qualify for the super license. 40 meters must be collected within three years. Herta comes with the overall ranks seven, three and five in the IndyCar series, however, only on 32.
This is where the points key comes into play: The FIA, the international automobile association, has put the IndyCar series on a par with the WEC endurance world championship and Formula 3. The master of this racing series receives exactly the 40 points that are sufficient for the super license. From second place in the overall ranking, points are then awarded according to the key 30-20-10-8-6-4-3-2-1.
Alonso shows little understanding that the IndyCar drivers no longer receive super license points: “I think that there are certainly series like the IndyCar that are of such a high level that you should get the necessary points, as in other categories in Europe. That is sure to be a good debate. ”
But: “That is more of a question for the FIA, or whoever has to do with the licensing issue.” Colton Herta is next to Guanyu Zhou and Antonio Giovinazzi a hot candidate for the second Alfa Romeo cockpit in the Formula 1 season 2022. The team has already signed a driver: the current Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas.
