Fernando Alonso thinks about the retirement of Kimi Raikkonen, his teammate at Ferrari in 2014 and rival in F1 for years.
The last big news that F1 has left has been the retirement of Kimi Raikkonen, on which Fernando Alonso also wanted to comment. The Spaniard and the Finn were teammates in 2014 at Ferrari , but they never managed to have a great personal relationship.
‘The Iceman’, as Raikkonen is known, has always been characterized by his shyness and his peculiar character on and off the track. Despite this, Alonso praises his former teammate and rival on the track.
“Always fair and respectful, also tough but old school, no tricks. In that sense I will miss him because you knew you could trust Kimi when you went wheel to wheel, because he would never put you in danger. He was a clean rival”, Alpine assures.
Both debuted in Formula 1 the same year, in 2001, Alonso with Minardi and Raikkonen with Sauber, and since then they have staged epic battles on the track.
On a personal level, Alonso affirms that he will not notice his absence too much: “Not much, I don’t know him well enough to have an opinion. We know that Kimi is special, shy, I was his partner in 2014, at Ferrari, but that year we didn’t have the chance to get to know each other more than now. “
However, he hopes that everything will go well for him once his Formula 1 career is over: “There will always be twenty drivers, the orders will change and at some point we will leave. It is his decision, he has an incredible race and he enjoyed his time here. I wish him the best for the future, “he concludes.
Kimi Raikkonen had made the decision that he would retire in 2021 during the winter break. At the same time, the Finn told his team, Alfa Romeo, but has not wanted to make it public until now in case he changed his mind during the season.
