Ferrari is third in the Constructors’ Championship with a 39.5 point lead over McLaren. There are only two races left. Although the current cars say little about what will happen after the introduction of the new regulations, Mattia Binotto says that there are indeed important things that are relevant for 2022. For that reason, it is also important to keep pushing and to dot the i’s and cross the t’s, says the Italian.
“It’s quite relevant what’s going on now,” Binotto said when he passed on Motorsport.com was asked whether the current form is still of value for next season. “Certainly in terms of our actions when it comes to managing a race, but also because of the new driver Carlos [Sainz] who still has to get used to our car and the working method. I think about the strategy, the way we work with the tires, all the models we’ve developed with the drivers. Teamwork with the drivers is very important. We have improved every race in that regard this year and that will certainly be useful for next season. It’s not just about race management, it’s also about the way the entire team works. That’s important and I think we’re on the right track for 2022 in that regard. The car is definitely different, but the targets we’re working on and what we’re doing in the simulator compared to what we’re experiencing in practice is also part of that process. It’s about interaction between engineers, people and drivers. We always try to improve ourselves and we certainly succeeded this season.”
“We have to prove ourselves every race”
With the recently introduced power source, Ferrari has been able to unload its closest competitor McLaren in the constructors’ championship, but Binotto does not want to take an advance on third place yet. “I think every race can be different,” said the Italian. “We have an important margin, but every race we start again and we are evenly matched. We will have to prove that we can stand it.”
