Max Verstappen won the race at the very last Grand Prix of 2021 in Abu Dhabi and is now world champion. The Dutchman was able to overtake his rival Lewis Hamilton on the final lap, thanks to a safety car caused by Nicholas Latifi. Mercedes did win the drivers’ championship, but the team will not be satisfied with that.
Verstappen won on the Yas Marin Circuit, while Hamilton has to settle for second. The Briton drove most of the race at the front and seemed elusive for Verstappen for a long time. The Dutchman had to get help from his teammate Sergio Pérez. The Mexican held up the seven-time world champion long enough for Verstappen to still be able to join. Afterwards it turned out to be important seconds for Verstappen. The 24-year-old world champion thanked his teammate during and after the race.
