Pierre Gasly looks back on his 2021 season with AlphaTauri. The Frenchman managed to score 110 points this season and that is more than ever in his Formula 1 career. The 25-year-old AlphaTauri driver finished ninth and showed his qualities in the midfield this season.
“I think our car was better in qualifying than in the race,” Gasly told Motorsport Week. This season AlphaTauri also rode a rookie after the departure of Daniil Kvyat. Yuki Tsunoda joined AlphaTauri and as a result, Gasly became more responsible. “This year we had a much better understanding of what we needed with the group of engineers,” says the Frenchman. “We also had a little more influence on what I needed from the car.”
Gasly: ’Was a little more responsibility on me’
“With Yuki as a team-mate, there was a bit more responsibility on me, but I’m fine with that. I also had more responsibility about which direction we would go.’ AlphaTauri finished sixth this season, but fifth place would certainly have been possible. Unfortunately, the sister team of Red Bull Racing had the misfortune that Tsunoda sometimes underperformed. Nevertheless, the team is satisfied with the duo and they will continue with the same team next year.
Gasly hopes of course to return to Red Bull one day, but for now feels very comfortable with AlphaTauri. “I feel like I’ve made a step in terms of the setup and the possibilities to get the most out of the car.” The AlphaTauri driver managed to win another Grand Prix in 2020. That didn’t happen this season, but the 25-year-old driver did finish in the top six nine times. “This was probably my most consistent year,” Gasly concludes.
