While Sergio Perez disappointed badly and failed to reach Q3, Pierre Gasly drove the stars from the sky and can start the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday from P4. He is behind Verstappen and the two Mercedes drivers.
The Frenchman is comfortable in his own skin and enjoying the Losail International Circuit. “It’s really great. I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s one of the top five tracks I think for me. It’s really high speed and flows well. You’re always doing something in the cockpit. Lots of g- powers, a lot of adrenaline.”
It went wrong in the final Q3 round. Gasly curbed a little more than usual and his front wing gave out, causing his tire to puncture. It is not the first time this season, because in Italy and Russia his wing already flew off after a relatively small trip.
“When I saw my tire I knew it was wrong. We’ve lost front wings all year, so we know they are very fragile. I was in seventh gear when I lost the front wing, so that was quite a shock. But luckily everything went well.”
Gasly would like to help Verstappen
As an AlphaTauri driver, he is part of the Red Bull family, and since Sergio Perez can only be found in eleventh place on Sunday, Red Bull secretly hopes that Gasly can play a role. the Frenchman would like that, but tempers expectations.
“I’m going to try, but I’m not driving a Red Bull. I don’t have the pace they have. If I get a chance on the first lap or at the start, I’m definitely going to try. Or if the pace is good enough in the race, but I expect them to be faster.”
But, everything is and remains possible. “It’s a new track, so maybe something unexpected could happen. I’m going to try it of course. If I can finish on the podium, I’ll do my best,” said Pierre.
