Antonio Giovinazzi has not left a good impression at Alfa Romeo in Turkey. The Italian has still not been offered a contract extension, and after ignoring team orders during the race at Istanbul Park, he is certainly not scoring any points with the team.
Alfa Romeo scored zero points at the Turkish GP, Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen finished eleventh and twelfth respectively. However, according to the Swiss team, there was a chance to score one or more points, but after Giovinazzi ignored team orders, this chance fell into the water.
Raikkonen was one second per lap faster than his Italian teammate in the final phase of the race. Giovinazzi was asked to step aside for the Finn, but the team orders were refused. This made it impossible for Raikkonen to attack Esteban Ocon for tenth place in Turkey.
“We asked him to switch positions,” says Alfa Romeo’s Trackside Engineer Xevi Pujolar. “But Antonio tried to drive a little faster again and made the decision himself that he wanted to keep driving for his teammate.” Giovinazzi eventually finished within a second of Ocon, but Raikkonen most likely had the speed to attack the Frenchman.
“With the last laps we could have potentially been faster as a team,” Pujolar analyzes after the Turkish Grand Prix. “This situation was not ideal for us. I really don’t understand why we couldn’t just switch, because we could easily reverse this later.”
Ignoring team orders may not be a smart move by Giovinazzi. The Italian has still not received a contract extension with the Swiss racing stable. Rumors have been circulating for some time that he has little chance of a seat before 2022.
