Timo Glock expects Mercedes to be hindered by the choice to announce Bottas early in the season that he will be replaced. He thinks the fact that the Finn is leaving after this season makes him more unreliable, while Perez wants to prove himself worthy of that second seat at Red Bull.
With five races to go in the championship and a difference of only twelve points between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton , the second drivers from both teams can play an important role in who eventually takes the world title. In conversation with Speedweek , former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock says that he expects Mercedes to be at a disadvantage because Bottas leaves at the end of the season.
“I see Red Bull Racing in the better position there. Mercedes made the decision early on to replace Valtteri Bottas next season with George Russell . That was clear, but now Mercedes can no longer fully rely on Bottas. You can see that in the way the Finn behaves in certain situations, such as in Russia, where the fastest lap was the goal.’
Perez wants to prove himself
The German expects that Red Bull can fully rely on its second driver Sergio Perez, who has already extended his contract for next season. ‘The Mexican will support Max. This is also about the future and Sergio, who has been confirmed for 2022, will do everything he can to support his team as best he can.”
