Haas team boss Gunther Steiner knows that rookies Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin are still in the learning phase. Nevertheless, he is convinced: “We will be on a reasonable level with the drivers in 2022.”
The Russian GP ended prematurely for Mick Schumacher, his Haas team-mate Nikita Mazepin crossed the finish line in eighteenth place. Nevertheless, Gunther Steiner is satisfied with the progress made by his two rookies. Because these have to compete in the inferior Haas racer. And this year’s car has not been further developed as everything is focused on building the next generation of vehicles to be used next year.
“You can see from the boys’ performance that they are learning, and that is the most important thing,” said Haas team boss Gunther Steiner in the Sochi paddock. «It was very nice that Mick was so close to Kimi Raikkonen in qualifying. That is always encouraging. There aren’t many fights we can fight right now, so that’s always satisfying.”
“I think we’re getting better with every race and the goal is to prepare as well as possible for the next year, in which we can hopefully fight for points again,” added the South Tyrolean. And he also emphasized: “Both of them learn a lot and they would probably never admit it. But when you start in Formula 1 you think you know everything. Then a few races later you realize how little you knew when you started.”
“This learning process will take a while,” says Steiner. “You are still so young and will continue to learn for a few more years. But at least they now know all the work processes and the whole team. We have always said that we want drivers who stay with us for more than a year because it takes time to get used to everything, especially as a rookie in a championship. But I think we’ll be on a reasonable level with the drivers in 2022.”
